What will teaching be like in 2024-25?

All students studying on an on-campus programme will receive in-person teaching. Where online and digital options enhance the student experience, or have been requested by our students, we will continue to use them to benefit their learning.

How will my degree be assessed?

You can be confident that all programmes fairly assess the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during your degree. Assessment approaches will vary by degree programme and the needs of external bodies. In-person invigilated summative examinations are just one of the ways in which we assess.

Keeping you up to date

We’ve designed an induction programme to welcome you into our friendly student community. Please look out for email communications about this.

Head to our Welcome webpages to see the steps you need to take before coming to Newcastle. Please note this information will be updated for the 2024-25 academic year on 5 August. There is helpful information about arranging travel and confirming accommodation, our airport meet and greet service and immigration so please read through carefully.

Term dates for 2024–25

The 2024-25 academic year starts on Monday 16 September 2024. All students must aim to arrive on campus in Newcastle by 16 September for the start of Semester 1. Some programmes may have an earlier start date, if this applies to you your academic school at the University will write to you to confirm this.

You can start the registration process online before you arrive. Information is available on our Student Welcome pages. Please note this information will be updated for the 2024-25 academic year on 5 August. 

It is important that you arrive on time to ensure you don’t miss any important induction or teaching and assessment activities. However, if you are going to be late due to delays caused by issues such as immigration or travel delays, arrival up until Monday 7 October 2024 may be possible depending on your degree programme and subject to approval. To seek approval for a late start please contact [email protected].

Students can still complete their registration if necessary after they arrive, but they must be able to attend classes from the latest arrival date approved by the University.

Postgraduate students

The end of the academic year for postgraduate taught students is Friday 12 September 2025. All other term and semester dates are as indicated above.

Non-standard study periods

Some programmes offered at our campuses in Singapore and Malaysia, as well as some delivered at Newcastle, have term dates that differ from those given above. In these cases, students will be notified of term dates separately.

International Welcome Programme

Our International Welcome starts on Tuesday 10 September 2024 and runs until Friday 13 September 2024.

Our Meet and Greet service from Newcastle Airport will be running from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 September 2024. Booking for the Meet and Greet service will be available in August 2024 on our International Welcome webpage.

Our International Welcome events, including an information fair and information sessions, will be running from Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 September 2024. Information about the fair, sessions and social activities will be available on our International Welcome webpage from August 2024. 

 

What about student accommodation?

How do I apply for accommodation?

If you've made us your 'firm' choice University, you can now apply for your student accommodation. Our new student guarantee applies to applications received by 30 June 2024.

Before you apply take some time to research your accommodation options. Keep in mind that, while we guarantee eligible students a room, this may not be one that you have chosen. Additionally, familiarise yourself with the ways to apply. These differ depending on your course type, the duration of your stay, if you're coming with your family, or if you need room suitable for your medical needs.

When can I arrive?

Moving-in day is always an exciting time and in September thousands of new students join us. To allow for a smooth and safe arrival, we will ask you to book an arrival slot. You'll do this as part of your mandatory accommodation induction. This will be available around two weeks before your arrival. Arrival slots will be available from 9 September for international students and between 12 - 15 September for students in the UK. We are unable to offer earlier arrival dates.

Accessing facilities

The University offers a wide range of services to support students during their studies, including health and wellbeingacademic skills and careers support.

Recent events

You may have seen media reports of recent events across the UK. The disturbances over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of August are not representative of our community, our region or the UK. This was made very clear when thousands of people in Newcastle and across the UK held peaceful anti-racist demonstrations on the 7th and 10th of August to show support and solidarity across communities.

Enquiry telephone line

You can contact the student helpline on 0191 208 3333 (open 9:30 - 16:30 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 10:00 – 16:30pm Wednesday).

We also have a free student support network called TalkCampus. It’s a free-to-download app where you can talk with other students from around the world. 

Urgent help

If you have an urgent wellbeing need outside normal working hours, please contact University Security on 0191 208 6817 (24 hours a day, seven days a week). 

If your health deteriorates please contact the NHS helpline on 111 and follow their advice.  

Emergency services

For emergencies on campus, you should call 999. If you are worried about your own safety or the safety of a fellow student you can call University Security on 0191 208 6817 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
