Obi Ene is a Sport Scholar at Newcastle University and is currently in his third year studying Business, Accounting and Finance at Newcastle Business School. Demonstrating his dedication to Newcastle, Obi will continue representing the university within the BUCS league performing on the wing during his final year, whilst under contract with Sale.
The winger was recognised by Sale whilst attending England training camps but was unfortunately injured when the club firsts reached out to him. After an intense preseason training with the sharks, Obi proved his skills on and off the pitch earning the number 14 on his shirt in their fixture against Bedford Blues on the 9th September. During his debut he left his all out on the pitch including a try for Sale, which contributed to the team winning the game. What an incredible start to the season!
Following this amazing achievement, Obi said:
“It’s a really proud moment getting my first pro contract, after a tough preseason it feels like it’s all paid off. I’m pushing on now in my last season with NURFC and look forward to the next few years!”
Fergus Mulchrone, Academy Manager for Sale Sharks, also added:
“Obi did not disappoint through Preseason. He worked incredibly hard to get himself in the best possible shape and ultimately earn himself a contract with the club."
Alumni, and ex-England Universities player, Jasper Mcguire also recently signed a full-time contract with Premiership club Saracens. The loosehead will play on loan for Ampthill RUFC during the 23/24 season whilst he develops his skills and gains additional experience as a front rower.
Darren Fearn, Director of Rugby at Newcastle University, expressed his opinions on Obi and Jaspers achievements on behalf of the rugby department:
“It's brilliant for Obi and Jasper, we are proud of what both have achieved and really excited to see what the future holds, they have worked extremely hard while in the Nort East and deserve this opportunity. As a rugby program to have players progressing to the Premiership Champions and runners up is fantastic to see.”
