From 18 down to one of NBL’s greatest comebacks
9 February 2024
After giving up 58 points in the first half, it looked like stopping Justin Hedley and Loughborough Riders was going to be a task for Newcastle’s defence.
A solid 3rd quarter meant the university side started the 4th, and final, period 15 points behind. The first 5 minutes Newcastle continued to hang in but had now fallen behind with 18 points behind.
Just when it looked like the game was all over, Newcastle mounted one of the greatest comebacks the division has ever seen! On the back of a 21-2 run, Newcastle finished the game on a 12-0 charge, Justin Hopkins scoring the winning basket of the game with only one second remaining.
The atmosphere in the room was electric as the crowd erupted after a nerve-wracking last quarter.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be a part of a game like that, the crowd really got behind us when it mattered most. We are looking forward to our next home games to continue the growing atmosphere of the community”.
