Introduction
Steve McHanwell is Professor of Anatomical Sciences and a National Teaching Fellow. Previously he held appointments in University College London and as an MRC French Exchange Fellow in the Institute of Embryology in Nogent-sur-Marne, Paris. He is a founder member of the Trans European Pedagogic Anatomy Research Group serving first as Secretary General and is currently President of the Group. He served as Honorary Education Officer for the Anatomical Society for nine years. He has won a number of student awards for his anatomy teaching and in 2007 was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. He has taught anatomy to a wide range of student groups but currently his main teaching in anatomy is to undergraduate and postgraduate students in dental sciences and in speech and language sciences. He is co-author (with Martin Atkinson) of Basic Medical Sciences for Speech and Language Therapy Students and a member of the editorial team for Gray’s Anatomy (41st edition). His research interests span both anatomy and education. In anatomy his current interests centre on the anatomy, clinical anatomy, innervation and development of the larynx, work done in collaboration with JR Sanudo in Complutense University, Madrid. His education interests focus on student learning in anatomy, curriculum theory and development and the reward and recognition of teaching excellence in higher education. He has just completed a project as Co-Principal Investigator on an HEA-Funded Inter-Institutional Benchmarking Project: Reward and recognition for Teaching in HE (with the universities of Tasmania, Wollongong and Leicester.
