Gwyndaf Roberts has a diverse and extensive background in both research and education. He began his career in cell and developmental biology, working for over ten years in research institutes in the UK and the USA. Following this, he dedicated 15 years to teaching in several challenging schools in the northeast of England, where he served as Head of Department and Assistant Headteacher, developing a track record of raising student attainment.
In 2018, he joined Bangor University’s School of Medical Science. There, he was the module organiser for several modules across the Biomedical Science programme, served as the Academic Lead for the Foundation Year, and contributed to lectures on the Graduate Entry Medicine programme. He also led a university wide project to reinforce the culture of academic integrity within the student community.
Since 2021, Gwyndaf has been a lecturer on the Medical Education Masters programme at Newcastle University Medical School, leading two modules: ‘Teaching and Learning in the Classroom’ and ‘Utilising Technology in Medical Education’. He also serves as the Senior Tutor for the Medical Education programme. He is a member of Association for the Study of Medical Education, the British Society for Cell Biology, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Gwyndaf's main area of interest is on the academic journeys undertaken by successful adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues, with a current focus on the educational experiences of medical students and resident doctors with dyslexia.
He is also has several projects exploring the relationship between student engagement and academic achievement, and establishing effective learning communities in online postgraduate education.
