Research Interests

My main research interest is in understanding the determinants of metabolic abnormalities associated with obesity and the role of physical activity in mitigating the relationship between obesity and diabetes risk.

Current Work

I am currently involved in a SPHR funded project to explore age related inequalities in receipt of treatment for and survival from colorectal cancer.

I have been involved in the physical activity component of an NIHR funded trial of a lifestyle intervention to improve glycaemic control in obese pregnant women (UPBEAT) and in research into the relationship between objectively measured physical activity and maternal blood glucose during pregnancy. This is an area of research that I am keen to pursue. 

In my role as a methodologist for the NIHR Research Design Service North East I have advised on the design of a wide range of studies, including trials and observational studies.

Undergraduate Teaching

I deliver sessions on epidemiology to undergraduate students on the MBBS and Biomedical Sciences BSc Honours programmes.

Postgraduate Teaching

I am the module lead for the Introduction to Research Study Design & Statistics (e-learning) module, which is one of the modules offered by Clinical and Health Sciences with Clinical Research MSc, PGDip, PGCert.

I deliver sessions for the Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods and Applied Epidemiology modules on the MSc in Public Health and Health Services Research.
