Current role
Senior Research Associate and Research Methodologist for NIHR RDS-NE
Qualifications
PhD Why are some obese individuals metabolically normal?
MSc (Distinction) Social Research, University of Northumbria, 1998
BA Business Studies (First Class Honours), University of Northumbria, 1995
Previous Positions
1999-2005 Research Associate, School of Clinical Medical Sciences, University of Newcastle
2003-2004 Research Fellow, School of Health & Social Care, University of Teesside
1995-1998 Junior Research Associate, Department of Psychiatry, University of Newcastle
Research Interests
My main research interest is in understanding the determinants of metabolic abnormalities associated with obesity and the role of physical activity in mitigating the relationship between obesity and diabetes risk.
Other Expertise
My other research interests include:
- Consequences of maternal obesity
- Assessing the public health importance of diabetes, obesity and related conditions in economically and socially disadvantaged populations
- Evaluating measures for the prevention of diabetes, obesity and related conditions, particularly in economically and socially disadvantaged populations
- Inequalities in cancer treatment and survival
Current Work
I am currently involved in a SPHR funded project to explore age related inequalities in receipt of treatment for and survival from colorectal cancer.
I have been involved in the physical activity component of an NIHR funded trial of a lifestyle intervention to improve glycaemic control in obese pregnant women (UPBEAT) and in research into the relationship between objectively measured physical activity and maternal blood glucose during pregnancy. This is an area of research that I am keen to pursue.
In my role as a methodologist for the NIHR Research Design Service North East I have advised on the design of a wide range of studies, including trials and observational studies.
Undergraduate Teaching
I deliver sessions on epidemiology to undergraduate students on the MBBS and Biomedical Sciences BSc Honours programmes.
Postgraduate Teaching
I am the module lead for the Introduction to Research Study Design & Statistics (e-learning) module, which is one of the modules offered by Clinical and Health Sciences with Clinical Research MSc, PGDip, PGCert.
I deliver sessions for the Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods and Applied Epidemiology modules on the MSc in Public Health and Health Services Research.
Student supervision
I currently supervise one PhD student, one MD student and two MRes students.
