I graduated from Newcastle Medical School in 2004 and spent one year in clinical training before returning to the Newcastle University to complete a Postgraduate MA in the History of Medicine. At this time I became involved in undergraduate teaching for medical students including medical ethics, communication skills and professional development.
I returned to clinical medicine and made the decision to specialise in geriatric medicine however, missing academic work, I obtained a NIHR academic clinical fellowship. I pursued my interest in medical education by researching potential strategies to improve undergraduate medical education about ageing and dementia, before becoming a university lecturer. I continue to work in clinical practice 1 day per week

I now work as a lecturer in ageing and education at the School of Biomedical Sciences and the Faculty of Medical Sciences Graduate School - I am involved with a range of educational projects aiming to improve education and training about ageing in its broadest context. A number of these projects directly involve older members of the public in design, delivery and evaluation of teaching.
My PhD thesis explored the ways in which medical students interact with people with dementia, and the associated ethical challenges that may arise.
Current research projects include:
- Educational evaluation using an inclusive approach (working with students and members of the public)
- Improving education about ageing and dementia
- Evaluating the impact of public involvement in teaching
My current teaching responsibilities include:
- Curriculum Director (PG MSc Clinical Health Sciences)
- Education and Training Lead, NIHR Newcastle BRC in Ageing and Longterm Conditions
- Module lead, Research Skills for Healthcare Professionals
- Module lead, NUAGE (Newcastle Ageing Generations Education) module
- Module lead, Clinical Ageing and Health (BMS 3017), Biomedical Sciences
- Patient and public involvement training at Newcastle BRC and graduate school
Im am interested in involving members of the public in University teaching, and have worked with "Voice North" on a number of initiatives to increase the level of public involvement in the courses that I teach.
