Research Interests
Main research interests while in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University concerned the role of retinoids (vitamin A and derivatives) and ligand-dependent transcription factors in cellular signalling processes, particularly relating to differentiation, apoptosis and cell stress. I am particularly interested in the use of systems biology to understand the dynamics of cell signalling. Related interests includes the role of thiopurines in cell signalling and immunosuppression, the inhibition of protein disulphide isomerase as a therapeutic strategy for cancer, and graphene as a biological platform for drug delivery and cell sensors.
Since retiring I have focused on my life-long passion for ornithology, particularly seabird biology, and ringing and tagging birds with electronic devices as monitoring and research tools. I have used GPS devices to study the local feeding ecology of Kittiwakes nesting on the Farne Islands and the Tyne Bridge, geolocators to study the global migration of Arctic Terns nesting on the Farne Islands, and the migraton of Roseate Terns nesting in Northumberland and the Irish Sea.
Current Work
The biology of Arctic Terns on their breeding sites, migration and non-breeding behaviour. Understanding the migration of Roseate Terns using geolocators. Conservation strategies for breeding seabirds to maintain biodiversity.
