Staff Profile
Mr Amar Rajgor is currently an National Institute for Health Research Doctoral Fellow in Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery and training to become a head and neck surgeon. He has successfully secured substantial funding from NIHR to research the application of artificial intelligence in head and neck cancer. In particular, this fellowship provides Mr Rajgor with dedicated time to develop the novel field of radiomics and laryngeal cancer. He is also supporting the growth of a radiomics research group in the North East and bringing together academics from the School of Computing (Newcastle University) and Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust (NuTH).
Mr Rajgor completed his medical degree at the University of Birmingham, during which he undertook an intercalated degree in Clinical Sciences. During this time he researched the immune responses of the placenta to Hepatitis C virus and was awarded a 1stclass honours degree. He also successfully secured the prestigious Centre for Human Virology Grant Award to advance this research. Following graduation Mr Rajgor has been pursuing a clinical academic career having successfully undertaken the Academic Foundation Programme and the NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship.
In his spare time Amar is a keen sportsman and has represented Warwickshire Cricket Club at youth level and England in Kabaddi. He also enjoys the outdoors and recently completed tough mudder
Mr Rajgor's research interest focusses on the application of artificial intelligence to head and neck cancer. In particular using radiomics to predict clinical outcomes in laryngeal cancer. To date, for his work he has secured substantial funding from NIHR and was awarded the Munro Black Prize as well as prizes at the British Association of Head & Neck Oncology Meeting and the British Society of Head & Neck Imaging Conference.
He has also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research (with distinction) and a variety of AI courses including the ‘Radiological Society of North America Imaging AI Certificate.’
Amar has been heavily involved with teaching and founded the ‘National Cadaveric ENT Core Skills Course.’ He also co-founded two national surgical courses (‘National Lower Limb Open Vascular Exposure Course’ and the ‘National Core Surgical Training Interview Course').
He has completed the Oxford Medical Training - 'Teach the Teachers Course' and is a mentor to a number of medical students and junior doctors. He has also been heavily involved in undergraduate teaching and regularly is an examiner for the medical school.
