Newcastle University Library has access to state-of-the-art off-campus storage facilities, meaning we can hold less-used material for much longer than some other academic libraries.

The Research Reserve currently houses back-runs of journals and books which haven't been consulted for over 5 years (longer in some subject areas).

Request and scan services

Requesting journal articles

Scanned copies of journal articles from the Research Reserve are available via the Desktop Delivery Service. To make a request follow the Request Scan/Borrow link within the journal record in Library Search.

Copies will be made available for you to download if you have a Newcastle University campus ID and password. Other customers can request a printed copy and will need to pay for this at 4p per page.

Borrowing journals

To borrow a journal from the Research Reserve complete the request form or follow the Request Scan/Borrow link within the journal record in Library Search which will take you to the journal request form.

Borrowing books

To borrow Research Reserve books, place a request using Library Search. You will need to log in first.

Consulting theses

To request a thesis, follow the Request to Consult this Thesis link within the thesis record in Library Search which will take you to the Thesis Request Form. Theses are available for consultation in the Library only.

When will my request or scan be available?

Books and journals will usually be available within 24 hours at the location you chose when placing the request, however any requests placed after 9.00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be available by Monday afternoon.

Access to the Research Reserve

Access to the Research Reserve can only be made by prior appointment using the contact details below.

Archaeological collections may only be accessed by prior arrangement with the curator, Andrew Parkin.
