Project description
I am developing a method for effective management of emissions from shipping activities. The method will be adaptive to change in ecosystem resilience to air emissions.
Methodology and objectives
I will develop a methodology to assess the level of emissions from shipping related activities in coastal port-city areas. The method will work towards meeting strict emission reduction targets.
The method will anticipate emerging technologies. It will be able to react to rapid regulatory changes and impact of change in ecosystems. It will improve technical, legislative and management measures for air emission reduction in shipping related activities in coastal waters.
The method will provide a tool for an adaptive management approach in air emission reduction of the shipping processes. Regulations and requirements are rapidly getting stricter. The climate is changing. The ability of the ecosystem to recover quickly from disturbance caused by human activity such as pollution is not constant. We need to address ecosystem resilience in the light of a changing climate.
The method will also compare different ports. It will provide the first rough emission estimates in overall port-city area air emission reporting. It will evaluate pollution emissions from shipping processes. It will determine high impact locations and level of severity for top pollutants. To do this, it will use holistic determination of impact severity indicators.
Result
The novel methodology has delivered the model for assessment of emissions from ships in port’s 20nm boundary area. The model will be further used to compare pollution from ships in different ports. It will analyse impact of ship emissions to the environment. This will provide a better understanding of effective strategies for reduction of emissions from shipping.
