Project description
Wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) craft can sustain flight over a level surface, usually over the sea.
The acceleration to take-off regime of a WIG-craft from both calm water and rough seas dictates the transport efficiency and commercial viability over other craft. These include low speed aircraft and marine vessels. We use these craft for high speed transportation of cargoes and personnel to and from offshore oil and gas fields. The motion regime is characterised by frequent crashes and excessive power requirements. This has rendered WIG-craft commercially unsuccessful as a marine vehicle.
I am carrying out modelling, simulation and performance assessment of the aero-hydrodynamics of aerodynamically supported marine vehicles.
I am focusing on the aero-hydrodynamic coupling effect on the performance of a WIG-craft during its take-off regime. I will explore the design and operational shortcomings that hinder the commercial success of WIG-craft. I will suggest ways to choose the design and operational parametric ranges for crash prevention and hump drag reduction.
