Project description
I will produce a method to allow the seafarers of today to be sufficiently trained and able to cope with the change to automation. My research will also equip the seafarers of tomorrow with situational awareness. This will ensure that they do not become reliant on the operating parameters of autonomous systems.
Methodology and objectives
I will create a scenario for use on onboard shipping simulators. It will allow a small flaw and measure the test subjects response time. At the same time, it will allow the test subject to carry out a variety of watchkeeping tasks. This scenario will vary with different simulator manufacturer. This will also allow multiple variations of the experiment. Additionally, multiple British maritime testing centres will carry out the testing. This will enable the experiment to be taken internationally.
Results
The results of my research will allow for the development of new training and safety requirements. These will improve the knowledge of future and current seafarers with regard to autonomous shipping.
