Project description
Biosensors are analytical devices. They measure the amount of dissolved analyte in a unit volume when it interacts with a biological factor. The analysis uses two fundamental elements: receptor and transducer.
Carbon substances remain attractive for the receptor. This is due to their superior heterogeneous nature. They have various classifications: carbon nanotubes, pyrolytic graphite, graphene, and so on.
There have been many advances in biosensing. But there are still challenges.
We are investigating a novel approach for designing graphene biosensing instruments. The approach will overcome the obstacles facing the sensors. Effective electron transfer from the surface of graphene devices is key to superior performance.
We are working on graphene-based biosensors. We will develop a novel graphene-based biosensing unit for medical applications.
The project will:
- grow flat few-layer graphene on a transition metal, polymer or silicon substrates
- characterise graphene electrically and chemically using multiple characterisation methods
- functionalise graphene, based on the properties from characterisation to perform a specific task
- apply graphene devices to a medical application to perform biological measurements efficiently
