Project description
In the past, we have widely used animals to assess the biological effects of pharmaceutical and skincare products. But recently, Europe has banned animal use for cosmetic evaluation. This has created an urgent need for the development of novel testing models.
I will create a fully-functional human skin model. I will validate the model and ensure that is it suitable for industrial applications. Bioprinting is able to reproduce native biological structures. Compared to traditional techniques, bioprinting reproduction is rapid and precise. It also allows scale-up. New bio-inks based on natural skin components and a novel bioprinting system will provide the tools to produce a model that mimics the morphological, biochemical and physiological properties of skin.
