Prof Vladimir Terzija (IEEE Fellow, Humboldt Fellow) has a broad academic and industrial experience in designing electrical power and energy systems. In the past, he has been working on new theoretical concepts for optimal operation of electrical power systems (transmission, distribution, microgrids), recently expanded to the concepts addressing issues related to integrated energy systems. His scientific work has always been supported by experimental work based on smart technologies (sensors and ICT), for example through hardware in the loop testing facilities, or real-time data-acquisition platforms for monitoring, protection and control purposes.
Prof Terzija joined Newcastle University in March 2023. Spending almost 15 years (2006-2020) at The University of Manchester (Manchester, UK), he has reached a recognisable national and international reputation. Willing to be intellectually challenged in a very different way, in 2021 Prof Terzija moved to Skoltech (Moscow, Russian Federation), where he was a Head of Laboratory for Modern Energy Systems and PI of several newly approved and prestigious research projects. The total value of all projects in which Prof Terzija was involved is £40M+ (£17M+ assigned directly to Prof Terzija). According to Google Scholar, his h=57. He, however, does not consider the h index as the only critical one. On contrary, Prof Terzija’s ambition is to make critical and positive impact to the society he is working in, from the perspective of economic, social and cultural development. In other words, he is very keen to perform research and research-informed teaching at the faculty and cross-faculty level, converting it into successfully graduated students, securing external research funding, building strategic links with relevant industries and supporting the University REF related targets.
His major focus are teaching and leadership in research supporting carbon net-zero agenda. Using his international industrial experience gathered with ABB-Germany, where he has spent 6 years as a Senior Application Engineer (2000-2006), the expert for designing of medium-voltage switchgear, substation automation, microSCADA systems and concepts of digital substation, he has been demonstrating leadership of a number of industry-driven, small and large scale projects supporting partners from UK, Europe, India, China, etc. By this, he determined the future of the existing electrical power systems, from the perspective of application of new technologies and solutions for secure, reliable, flexible and resilient operation of future electrical power and energy systems. In general, his research has resulted in a number of internationally recognized new solutions for smart technology enabled situational awareness, control and protection of electrical power systems. In the past, his major industrial partners were National Grid, (UK/USA); Scottish Power, (UK); Electricity North-West, (UK); ENTSO-E, (Europe); TenneT, (Germany/Netherland); China State Grid, (China); Elektroprivreda Srbije, (Serbia), and others.
A number of his speculative and low TRL ideas were converted into practical applications currently used for design of advanced Intelligent Electronic Devices (e.g. modern protective relays – SEL, or GE), smart frequency and voltage control schemes (System Operator National Grid, UK, General Electric, as well as ENTSO-E and TenneT, Europe), operational tripping schemes (National Grid, UK), or System Integrity Protection Schemes (General Electric).
As an academic leader in a number of industry-funded research projects (total value more than £40M) he has been providing research and consultancy to transmission and distribution network owners, system operators and manufacturers of advanced digital technologies.
As an Editor in Chief of the high impact International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems (IJEPES) Prof Terzija is now determining strategies and directions of international research on power technologies and solutions leading to clean energy production, optimal transmission and utilization.
Prof Terzija speaks fluently 3 languages, English, German and Serbian.
Prof Terzija demonstrated a strong leadership in exploring speculative and adventurous ideas supported by EPSRC (see his profile). He combined the following disciplines:
- understanding of physical nature of electrical power and energy systems,
- digital signal processing,
- optimal filtering and application of estimation theory,
- linear and nonlinear control,
- complex science, e.g. graph theory, or
- data science, e.g. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for smart grid.
He has been involved in teaching and designing of both traditional and new power systems related modules (courses), e.g. power system analysis, fundamentals of power systems, power system protection, power quality, wide area monitoring, protection and control, or switchgear and power plant.
By now, Prof Terzija has successfully graduated 25 PhD students.
Through his academically driven activities, Prof Terzija has published near 500 high impact research journal papers (h=57, source Google Scholar), determining directions of the development of modern smart grid technologies and solutions, in the first line through:
- advanced Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control System solutions,
- secure and reliable System Integrity Protection Schemes for prevention of power system blackouts,
- methods for protection of transmission networks, situational awareness of future power grids,
- approaches for maximizing integration of renewable energy sources into existing power networks,
- concepts for data-driven optimal power system operation,
- monitoring and control of multi-energy systems,
