Background
Dr Salaheddine graduated from Bright Star University of Technology, Libya, with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering in 1995, specializing in Automatic Control. He then studied for an MSc in Automation and Control, Newcastle University, UK in 2004, followed by a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2011 from the same university. He joined the Electrical Power research group, School of Engineering, Newcastle University in September 2013.

Postgraduate Research Group / PhD project
- Project title: Grid forming control for inverter-dominated power grid. The infrastructure of future electricity grids is envisaged to be inverter-dominated with a high energy mix. The high penetration of renewable resources and low carbon technologies entail considerable stability challenges for the electricity grid. For instance, these resources are mostly interfaced with the grid through power electronics, leading to loss of inertia that is normally supported by the rotating mass of large generators. Grid forming converters enable the transition to an inverter-based infrastructure via regulating the system voltages and frequency through local decentralized control. This project aimed at unlocking the potential features on the already existing converters in the grid to deliver the grid forming functionalities and a means of additional services to the network. Network characterization study will be initially conducted to identify the requirement of the control strategies of the grid-forming, which will be developed and tested under different operating scenarios. The project will involve an extensive simulation and experimental studies to validate these algorithms.
