Roles and responsibilities
To support the research and teaching activities of the school of engineering, Engineering Services through the provision of laboratory and/or workshop management and technical expertise. To supervise technical staff in the area as designated by the School Technical Manager under the direction of the Technical Team Leader.
1. In conjunction with the Technical Team Leader for the activity, be responsible for the day to day operation specific laboratories and/or workshops, facilities and items of equipment and/or machinery.
2. To be responsible for the disposal of hazardous materials according to Standard University procedures. Ensure compliance with relevant safety procedures including relevant risk assessments. In conjunction with the Team Leader and School Safety Officer, monitor compliance with all statutory and local safety arrangements.
3. To train and advise staff and students in appropriate laboratory and/or workshop techniques and good laboratory and/or workshop practice to ensure that they are able to carry out their work in a safe manner. To provide laboratory and/or workshop supervision and training for postgraduate and undergraduate students and junior technical staff using the facilities to ensure safe working practices are followed.
4. In conjunction with Academic, research and other technical staff and students as appropriate, identify consumable and equipment requirements, and initiate their ordering according to the School and University purchasing procedures. Keep financial records of any activities as directed by the Technical Team Leader.
5. To contribute to regular team meetings, health and safety meetings and workshop and/or laboratory audits.
6. Provide comprehensive support and advice to staff and students on technical development, design, preparation, construction, assembly and setting up of experiments, including supporting the scheduling of project activities to support research and teaching,
7. Responsible for undertaking tests and experiments as part of ongoing research teaching, or commercial outreach activities in accordance with appropriate standards, including collating, providing both data and results for interpretation, processing and archiving.
8. Facilitate and carry out planned and unplanned maintenance of workshop and laboratory equipment in the various laboratories (Newcastle and Offsite) to ensure that it is reliable and available for use when required.
9. Ensure that the laboratories (e.g. Hydrodynamics & Cavitation Tunnel Labs) are supplied and stocked with consumable items and ordered as required so that teaching and research laboratory work is effectively supported.
10. Machine, fabricate, and assemble components, equipment and systems in support of teaching and research activities. Start, run and monitor a range of laboratory equipment and various teaching test rigs.
11. Any other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade which may be required.
