Dr Lyons joined Newcastle University in July 2013 and is currently a research visitor within the Electrical Power Research Group at the School of Engineering. He previously held the position of Lecturer in Power Systems at the school. After leaving his role as Lecturer at Newcastle University, he worked as Future Networks Development Senior Specialist at ESB Networks, Ireland before taking his current role as Head of Group at the International Energy Research Centre (IERC) at Tyndall National Institute, Ireland.
His research is focussed on the challenges and solutions for decarbonisation of energy, transport and agriculture sectors predicated by the anticipated growth in low and zero carbon technologies such as PV, wind generation, electric vehicles and heat pumps and supported by the need to put enabling policy and business model infrastructure to enable this transition.
He was a senior smart grids researcher at Newcastle and Durham Universities where he lead the network flexibility trial design and analysis for the Customer Led Network Revolution (CLNR) which is the largest UK smart grid project thus far.
He received his B.E. degree in electrical and electronic engineering and an MEng.Sc degree in electrical engineering (range extender hybrid electric vehicles) from University College Cork, Cork, Ireland in 1999 and 2002 respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree from Durham University, Durham, UK, 2010. His doctoral research was in the area of centralised and distributed control of distributed energy resources, using hardware (laboratory) and software simulation, in future LV networks.
Dr Lyons is a chartered engineer.
