Dr. Gavin Lowes received the MSc in Automation and Control and PhD from Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK in 2017 and 2022 respectively. His PhD research was in developing low energy, passive acoustic sensing technology for wireless underwater monitoring networks. He was employed as a Research Associate in 2021 at Newcastle University working on intrabody acoustic communication for bioelectronic therapeutics. Currently he is working on developing passive acoustic localisation of vessel activity as part of the COUSIN (Cooperative Underwater Surveillance Networks) project.
Research Interests
Low power embedded systems, passive acoustic monitoring, digital signal processing, analog and digital circuit design, underwater acoustic communication, bioelectronic devices.
Active Projects
Cooperative Underwater Surveillance Networks (COUSIN) - The aim in this project is to investigate and practically demonstrate (at sea) novel joint designs of low-cost underwater acoustic networks for enhanced underwater monitoring and surveillance.
Past projects
Symbiotic Intrabody Networks for Bioelectronic Therapeutics - Create an ultra low energy, in-body acoustic communication platform for use in a wirelessly networked therapeutic implants which are powered by harvesting energy from the body's own energy supply: glucose.
My PhD was part of the EPSRC sponsored USMART project. This is a 3 year, £1.3M collaboration between Newcastle University, Heriot-Watt University and the University of York to develop affordable technology for large scale, smart wireless sensing networks to be deployed in the oceans. https://research.ncl.ac.uk/usmart/
