Athena SWAN
As a University, Faculty, and School, we have a strong track record in the Athena SWAN scheme. Athena SWAN advances gender equality with representation, progression and success for all. The School of Engineering was granted a Bronze award in March 2024.
EDI committee
Our EDI Committee works to:
- Ensure that the School creates a learning community which values and fosters equality, diversity and inclusiveness
- Provide a forum for staff or students to raise any equality, diversity or inclusion issues in a transparent manner and to ensure consultation with people who have protected characteristics
- Consider and review implementation of University, Faculty and School policies and procedures relating to equality, diversity and inclusion.
We work to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities in study and in employment with us, with particular focus on those with any protected charactistics. The characteristics protected by the Equality Act 2010 are:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage or civil partnership (in employment only)
- pregnancy and maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
Newcastle University Student Union also works hard to offer additional help support and information for marginalised or underrepresented groups in the student population.
