I am a Project Co-ordinator and manage a number of projects within the School of Engineering.
BEWISe Research Facility
I manage the Newcastle University’s new Biological Engineering: Wastewater Innovation at Scale (BEWISe) facility, which is the first of its type in Europe in large-scale wastewater treatment research using bacteria. We work in collaboration with Northumbrian Water at the Birtley Waste Water Treatment Site.
Working with the PI (Prof Russell Davenport), I have established a Facilities Online Management System which is used by industry and academics globally. It allows experimental investigation of water engineering innovations across a range of scales, allowing work that is scientifically rigorous and credible which is setting a new global standard for wastewater research.
We are a world-leading research space, developing cutting-edge solutions for sustainable wastewater treatment.
At BEWISe, Newcastle University and Northumbrian Water Group are working together to:
- speed up innovation in sustainable wastewater treatment
- experiment with low-energy biological treatment technologies
- develop low-cost ways to generate energy from waste
Engagement:
We are hosting a number of events, aimed at users of the facility and stakeholder groups. This will help shape the application process which will be a requirement for all to use the research equipment that is available.
Net Zero GeoRDIE
I am the Project Coordinator for the NetZero GeoRDIE project, which is led by Newcastle University (PI – Prof David Manning) in collaboration with Durham University and the University of Glasgow.
Using the existing bore hole which was excavated in 2011 at the Helix Site, Newcastle, all power resources that come from the heating and cooling extraction is aimed to power the surrounding buildings. This is a unique form of research because we hope to be able to prove to mitigate technical and economic risks with such deep geothermal energy.
The research sets out to mitigate the technical and economic risks associated with deep UK geothermal energy for heating and cooling, and so to facilitate its future adoption to enable zero carbon targets to be reached.
The project will address fundamental challenges in:
- heat abstraction and storage
- the engineering challenges of integrating geothermal energy to whole energy systems
- regulatory and legal implications of closed loop systems and subsequent liabilities
Engagement:
We will be hosting a number of events, aimed at partners and stakeholder groups. This will encourage work package development and interaction with interested groups. As part of the Helix community, we will also be working closely with partners on site.
