PGR Led Engagement
Introduction
The Doctoral College provides funding for PGR students to enter competitions and organise their own University wide events. In 2023-24 support was provided for :-
- The Newcastle University Translation and Interpreting Conference 2023 which took place in December 2023 and centred around the theme of embracing interdisciplinarity and explored ‘innovative investigations in Chinese and English translation and interpretive studies. The event featured 18 speakers representing 11 universities across the UK and China and had over 50 attendees.
- The Cullercoast Festival - Ocean Insight Exhibition/ 'Picture This' enabled 16 students (and 1 lecturer) at the Dove Marine to receive Infohackit training from Peter Moore Fuller. They developed visuals to showcase their research and these were used in the Cullercoats Festival on the 14th May 2024.
- The PGR Community Hub which is a collaboration between the NUSU PGR Community Society, Doctoral College, Research Culture Team and HASS RED programme that offers a friendly and informal interdisciplinary space where PGRs from all faculties can come together, share ideas and make progress on their research. Events are primarily run by PGRs and designed to create a relaxed environment to share experiences and develop PGRs skills researchers.
YES Enterprise Programme
The Doctoral College is sponsoring a number of students to enter this years competition. Further details can be found at (https://www.yescompetitions.co.uk/)
YES supports research students to work in a team to develop a hypothetical business, and as part of the exercise, make a pitch to demonstrate that the business could be investable and ultimately successful. You will hear from leading industry experts about the ways they go about making a business work and learn about the processes involved in bringing a service/product to market.
YES24 is delivered in three parts starting this September and concluding with a showcase event in January 2025. Starting in September, online training sessions give participants the know-how on all aspects of starting a new business. Mentors will be online to answer questions, give advice and provide a focus for ideas throughout October and November with oral business plan pitches being delivered in November and December at one of four industry innovation centres.
The best pitches from each session will be invited to showcase in January and compete for a prize fund of £10k. All involved in YES24 will be welcome at the showcase hosted in London.

3 Minute Thesis (3MT)
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition asks doctoral students to explain their research in just three minutes using only one slide. The explanation should be easily understood by a non-specialist. Originally developed by the University of Queensland, Australia it has been taken up by Universities across the world. The competition offers training followed by the opportunity to compete in a University final. The winner will then go forward to compete in the national competition.
